What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Community Educational Programs
This program is based on the success of our community-based meetings and a demand for additional requests from schools and organizations. STJP hosts community events in schools across our region for family and friends that have been or may become impacted by substance use and mental health (SUD/MH) disorders to create a space where they can find support and learn about the issues, trends and resources in SUD/MH. STJP has so far hosted six events in 2024 and 2025, reaching approximately 1,500 people. STJP provides speakers for these events and volunteers assist in all aspects of events. The program creates a space where participants can find support and learn about the issues, trends and resources in SUD/MH. STJP works collaboratively with the numerous partners, including the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) ChillRoom, Communities In Schools as well as designated school districts across the region. The events include prominent keynote speakers with expertise in the SUD/MH field.
Honest Obituary
Many families use purposefully vague language in obituaries about the cause of death when a young loved one dies from tragic circumstances. Mental health issues, suicides, overdoses, and accidental drug poisonings often go unmentioned in obituaries in the belief that it offers families more privacy and lessens their shame. However, concealing the true cause of death or using adjectives such as “unexpectedly” or “suddenly” only serve to continue the stigma surrounding substance use disorders, overdoses, poisonings, and suicides and discourage dialog about these issues. The Honest Obituary Program supports funeral directors as they consult with families in writing honest obituaries to help lessen the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders. STJP provides recommended language that families can reference while composing a loved one’s obituary to honor their truth and allow family members to step out of the shadow of guilt and shame.
